OPTIONS Aquires New Work Contract at Hearst Castle
an article written by Lisa hersch, OPTIONS PR/Special Events Manager
Known throughout the world, Hearst Castle, or "La Cuesta Encantada", The Enchanted Hill has become a new place of business for OPTIONS and an incredible opportunity for the 18 people involved in our new vocational group-supported employment program.
Three seperate crews work seven days per week at the visitor's center, and the San Simeon campground close by.
OPTIONS was approached by Hearst Castle Parks Maintenece Supervisor, Brian Camsuzou, regarding this contract which is specific in that is is geared toward providing vocational training within a work environment. Brandi Smith, who began with OPTIONS as master relief staff, is now the Hearst Castle manager and oversees all threeshifts.
Brandi saw the challenge of taking on the Hearst Castle position as not a job but an opportunity. And one that was even more important for the persons she works with.
"Not only did this create more jobs," Brandi said, "but it is also increasing our persons served social skills. They're learning teamwork both from their co-workers and their job coaches."
Brandi credits her family and friends with providing strong support network that is allowing her to be flexible while transitioning into this position and working the various shifts.
Brandi also says that without Chief Operating Officer Debbie Bertrando coordinating and revising the many schedules and shifts of this new start up, she would have been lost.
Debbie handled the initial organizational and structural components that go hand in hand with a project and contract of this magnitude.
This new contract has allowed OPTIONS to expand its vocational training within and offering opportunities to new employees.
Since OPTIONS' goal in all its services is "Full Inculsion", we feel the Hearst Castle Program allows our employees to truly be apart of their community.
